How to Create a Shopify Store in 2026? (Beginner Friendly)

To create a Shopify store, you sign up for a plan, set up your store details, pick and customize a theme, add products, connect a payment gateway, configure shipping and taxes, link a domain, and then take the store live by removing the password page.

A first version can be ready in an afternoon.

A good one takes a bit longer, because most of the work is in the details: clear product pages, honest policies, and a checkout that people trust.

If you would rather have a team build it, you will also see where professional website design fits in.

The quick checklist: 12 steps to a live Shopify store

  1. Decide what you are selling and to whom
  2. Sign up and choose a plan
  3. Set your store details, currency, and timezone
  4. Pick a theme and customize it
  5. Add products and organize collections
  6. Create the pages and policies shoppers expect
  7. Build your navigation menu
  8. Connect payments
  9. Set up shipping and taxes
  10. Connect a domain
  11. Add SEO basics and analytics
  12. Place a test order, then launch

Step 1: Decide what you are selling and who buys it

Shopify makes the technical side easy, which means the real work happens before you log in. Know your product, your buyer, and what makes your store a better choice than a marketplace listing. Check a few things on paper first:

  • Product and margin. Work out your cost per unit, shipping cost, and the price at which you still make money after fees.
  • Audience. Be specific. “Handmade candles for gifting” gives you better copy and better ads than “home decor.”
  • Brand direction. Your name, logo, colors, and fonts should feel consistent from the first page.

On the branding side, our guide on how many fonts a brand should have will help you keep typography tight, and if you want a custom mark, a logo design service can supply one that works on packaging, social profiles, and your storefront.

Step 2: Sign up and choose a Shopify plan

Go to Shopify’s site, enter your email, and answer the short questions about your business. Shopify’s pricing page lists a 3-day free trial, followed by a promotional rate for the first three months. You can pick a plan during signup or later.

Shopify pricing (checked October 19, 2026)

Here are the main plans from Shopify’s own pricing pages. Indian rupee prices come from Shopify’s India page and US dollar prices from its US page.

PlanIndia (monthly)India (billed yearly, per month)US (monthly)US (billed yearly, per month)Third-party payment fee
Basic₹1,994₹1,499$39$292%
Grow₹7,447₹5,599$105$791%
Advanced₹30,164₹22,680$399$2990.6%
PlusFrom ₹1,75,000Not listedFrom $2,300Not offered0.2%

What these numbers mean in practice:

  • Trial offer. Shopify’s India page lists 3 days free, then ₹20 per month for 3 months. The US page lists 3 days free, then $1 per month for 3 months. The offer can change, so read the terms at signup.
  • Third-party transaction fee. This is an extra percentage Shopify charges when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments. It matters in India, as the payments section below explains.
  • Staff accounts. On the US page, Basic includes no additional staff accounts, Grow includes 5, and Advanced includes 15.
  • Card processing rates on the US page start at 2.9% + 30¢ online for Basic and drop to 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. These apply to Shopify Payments, which is not available everywhere.

Which plan should you pick? Most new stores start on Basic. Move to Grow when you add staff or your sales volume makes the lower fees worth the higher monthly price. Plus is built for large brands with custom checkout needs.

Step 3: Set up your store details

Inside the Shopify admin, open settings and fill in the basics:

  • Store name and contact email
  • Business address, which also feeds invoices and policy pages
  • Store currency and timezone
  • Branding: logo, colors, and social links

Until you are ready, keep the storefront password-protected so the public cannot see unfinished pages.

Step 4: Pick a theme and customize it

Your theme controls the look of the storefront. Meetanshi’s 2026 guide describes Dawn as the default starting point, with more options in Shopify’s theme library. Open the theme editor to change sections, colors, fonts, and layouts without writing code.

A few design rules save beginners from common mistakes:

  • Use one or two fonts. Fewer fonts keep your pages cleaner and faster.
  • Pick a simple color palette. A neutral base with one accent color for buttons works for most stores. The free random color generator is handy for trying combinations.
  • Keep the homepage focused. Lead with your best product or offer, then a short list of collections, then social proof.
  • Match your product photos. Use the same background, lighting, and aspect ratio so the catalog feels cohesive.

If your store is built around visuals, such as prints or art, you will also find tips in our guide on how to make a photography website.

Step 5: Add products and organize collections

Go to Products and add each item with the following:

  • Title and description. Write for the buyer, not the search engine. Lead with what the product does for them, then add materials, sizes, and care.
  • Photos. Add several angles, plus one lifestyle shot if you can. Add alt text that describes the image.
  • Price and compare-at price. The compare-at price shows a strikethrough when you run a sale.
  • Cost per item. Entering it lets Shopify show your margin.
  • Inventory and variants. Add sizes, colors, and SKUs so stock counts stay accurate.
  • SEO fields. Edit the page title and meta description. A common guideline is to keep titles under about 60 characters and meta descriptions under about 158, per Meetanshi’s 2026 setup guide.

You can add products one at a time or import them in bulk with a CSV file. Then group them into collections, either manually or with automatic rules based on tags, price, or product type. Good collections make browsing easier and give you extra pages to rank in search.

Step 6: Create the pages and policies shoppers expect

Trust decides whether a first-time visitor buys. At minimum, create:

  • About Us, which tells your story and who is behind the store
  • Contact, with a form and at least one real way to reach you
  • Privacy policy, refund policy, shipping policy, and terms of service

Start from a policy template if you like, then edit it to match your actual practices. Rules on returns, consumer protection, and invoicing vary by country, so consult a qualified professional for legal and tax details.

To save time on the first draft, the free About Us generator and Contact Us generator give you starting text you can rewrite in your own voice.

Step 7: Build your navigation menu

Open Navigation and set up your main menu so shoppers can reach anything in two clicks. A simple structure works well: Shop (with collection links underneath), About, Contact, and a footer menu for policies. Keep labels plain. “Shop All” beats “Explore Our Universe.”

Step 8: Connect payments

This step trips up many first-time sellers, especially in India.

In Settings, open Payments and choose how you will take money. Options include Shopify Payments where it is available, PayPal, other third-party gateways, and manual methods like cash on delivery.

An India-specific note. A Razorpay article published April 25, 2026 (last modified August 3, 2026) states that Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Indian stores connect a third-party provider instead. Shopify’s own pricing page for India still mentions Shopify Payments in its footnotes without listing a rate, so check which options appear in your admin before you plan around any one gateway.

According to the same Razorpay article, activating Razorpay on Shopify works like this:

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Payments.
  2. Add a third-party provider and select Razorpay.
  3. Enter the Merchant ID, API key, and secret key from your Razorpay dashboard.
  4. Test in test mode first, then switch to live mode once every payment flow works.

Razorpay also lists documents to prepare before setup, including PAN, GSTIN, and a verified business bank account.

Because Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced) on top of what your gateway charges, factor both into your pricing. Gateway fees themselves are not stated in the sources I reviewed, so confirm them with your provider.

Step 9: Set up shipping and taxes

Open Settings and configure:

  • Shipping zones and rates. Decide between flat rate, free shipping above a threshold, or calculated carrier rates. Always cover your real cost.
  • Shipping profiles, if different products ship from different places or at different rates.
  • Taxes and duties. Set up tax collection according to where you sell.

Tax rules are not something to guess. Talk to an accountant about registration, invoicing, and rates for your location before you take real orders.

Step 10: Connect a domain

Every store starts with a free myshopify.com address, but a custom domain looks more trustworthy and is easier to remember. You can buy one through Shopify or connect one you already own. Short, easy-to-spell names work best, and a .com is a safe choice if it is available.

Step 11: Add SEO basics and analytics

A theme gives you the technical foundation, but the content side is on you.

  • Page titles and meta descriptions for the homepage, collections, and top products
  • Short, readable URLs such as /collections/linen-shirts
  • Image alt text that describes each photo
  • Google Search Console and Google Analytics, so you can see how people find and use the store, a step Meetanshi’s guide also lists before launch
  • Helpful content, like buying guides or care instructions, that answers questions shoppers actually search for

If you want hands-on help, our search engine optimization service covers on-page and content work for stores like yours.

Step 12: Test everything, then launch

Before you remove the password page:

  • Place a test order and watch the full flow, from cart to confirmation email.
  • Check the store on a phone. Use the free responsive checker to see how pages look at different screen sizes.
  • Proofread every page, especially policies and product descriptions.
  • Click every link and button.
  • Check shipping rates for a few real addresses.

When it all works, remove the storefront password and the store is live.

What to do in your first month

Launching is the starting line. Over the next few weeks:

  • Collect your first reviews and add them to product pages.
  • Share the store on the channels where your buyers already spend time.
  • Watch your analytics for pages where people drop off, and fix the biggest one first.
  • Improve product photos and descriptions on your best sellers.
  • Add apps only when you have a clear need. Each one adds cost and can slow your pages.

Common Shopify mistakes to avoid

  • Picking a plan before testing the idea. Start on the lowest plan and upgrade when sales justify it.
  • Ignoring payment fees. Gateway fees plus Shopify’s third-party fee can eat more margin than you expect.
  • Skipping policies. Missing refund and shipping pages make shoppers hesitate and can create disputes.
  • Using too many fonts, colors, or apps. A cluttered store looks untrustworthy and loads slowly.
  • Weak product photos. Photos carry most of the buying decision online.
  • Not testing on mobile. Many shoppers will browse on a phone first.
  • Launching without a test order. Find the broken checkout yourself, not through a lost sale.

When it makes sense to hire help

Shopify is friendly enough for beginners, but you may want a developer or designer if you need a custom theme, complex product options, migrations from another platform, or a polished brand identity. Budget planning helps here, so our guides on website development cost in India and website designing cost in Hyderabad explain what drives pricing. If you need something beyond a standard store, such as a custom admin or integrations, look at custom web application development.

On Shopify’s India pricing page, Basic costs ₹1,994 per month, or ₹1,499 per month when billed yearly. On the US page, it is $39 monthly or $29 per month billed yearly. You will also pay for a domain, any paid theme or apps, and payment processing fees.

Is there a free trial on Shopify?

Shopify’s pricing pages list a 3-day free trial, followed by ₹20 per month (India) or $1 per month (US) for the first three months, as of October 19, 2026. Check the terms at signup.

Can I create a Shopify store without coding?

Yes. The theme editor, product manager, and settings screens are all point-and-click. Code only becomes necessary for deep customization.
