Hygraph is a headless CMS built around GraphQL. It was called GraphCMS until July 2022, when the company rebranded around a feature called Content Federation, which pulls data from outside systems into one GraphQL API.
A Berlin company runs it, and it competes with Contentful, Sanity, Storyblok and Strapi.
Hygraph is a closed, hosted product, so it has no GitHub star count and little public download data. It shares funding, a few customer claims and a yearly GraphQL survey.
This page keeps to figures I could trace to a named source and date, flags vendor claims, and says where I could not verify something. Data was checked on October 20, 2026.

Hygraph Funding and company size
- Series B: $30 million, announced March 29, 2023, led by One Peak. Open Ocean, Peak and SquareOne (existing investors) and angel Boris Lokschin, co-founder and CEO of Spryker Systems, also took part (Hygraph’s announcement and Tech.eu).
- Total raised: $43.7 million at that point, per both sources.
- Series A: Dealroom lists a $10 million round in July 2021. Its disclosed amounts add up to $40 million, not $43.7 million, and its total field was a placeholder, so I used the figure from Hygraph’s own post.
- Team: 66 employees in March 2023, based in Berlin and spread across five continents, per Hygraph. Dealroom lists a 51 to 200 range, which matches.
- Founded: 2017, per Dealroom. The company was called GraphCMS until its rebrand.
- Valuation and revenue: Dealroom lists an enterprise value range of $120 million to $180 million. That is Dealroom’s estimate, and its financials table held only placeholders, so I would not quote it as a valuation. Hygraph does not disclose revenue, and One Peak’s quote described “strong and capital-efficient growth” without numbers.
- Later rounds: I found no round after March 2023, but I did not check filings.
The 2022 rebrand and what Hygraph says it is
On July 12, 2022, GraphCMS became Hygraph and launched what it called a “Federated Content Platform” (press release via PR Newswire).
Content Federation connects remote data sources into one GraphQL schema, with the original source staying the system of record. The release also made these claims:
- More than 50,000 teams used the platform worldwide. The release gave no method, and I found no newer count.
- Product teams can compose services up to 10 times faster (company claim).
- The company is MACH certified. MACH stands for microservices, API-first, cloud-native and headless.
Hygraph Customers and results
- Named in 2023: Dr. Oetker, Shure, Samsung, Ashley Furniture and Philips (Series B announcement).
- Homepage logos (October 2026, undated): Samsung, Dr. Oetker, AutoWeb, Lindex Group, Bandai Namco, Voi, gamescom, Lego, Paramount, TED, Shure, Discovery, HolidayCheck and Telenor. A separate Hygraph product page also lists Siemens, Yamaha and HP.
- Vendor-reported outcomes (not independent, undated):
- Komax: time to market roughly tripled, with 20,000+ product variations across 40+ markets.
- Samsung: customer engagement up 15%.
- AutoWeb: website monetization up 20%.
- Voi: content in 10 languages across 12 countries, after a one-to-two-month WordPress migration.
- Hygraph says its read-only cache endpoint cuts latency 3 to 5 times.
- Customer total: Not published beyond the 2022 “50,000 teams” claim.
Logos show who has used the product in some form. They do not show the depth of use, and Hygraph gives no dates for the case-study results.
GraphQL survey (vendor-run)
Hygraph runs a yearly developer survey. Its GraphQL Report 2024 was written on January 18, 2024. The page shows a later update date of June 12, 2026, and its FAQ shows a different one, so the page is internally inconsistent about when it was updated.
| Finding | Figure |
|---|---|
| Actively use GraphQL | 61.7% |
| Exploring or building a proof of concept | 15.5% |
| Handle 100,000+ GraphQL calls a month | 56.3% |
| Handle 1 million+ calls a month | 28.7% |
| Cache in some form | 67% |
| Do not version their API | 52% |
| Do not measure API performance | 60.5% |
| Write servers in TypeScript or JavaScript | 77.6% |
How much to trust it: The report does not state the number of respondents or the field dates. Hygraph, a GraphQL-focused vendor, ran it, and the report says its audience likely leans toward GraphQL because of Hygraph’s community.
The sample appears self-selected, so the results describe the people who answered, not all developers. Respondents came from 30+ countries, and 41.3% had 10 or more years of professional experience.
Adoption signals
Hygraph is a hosted product, so there is no repository to count. npm is the only public developer signal I found, and it is a weak one.
| Package | Sep 19 to Oct 18, 2026 | Sep 19 to Oct 18, 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
@hygraph/management-sdk | 25,360 | 12,602 | About +101% |
I pulled both counts from npm’s public API on October 20, 2026 and calculated the change. This SDK is a tool for managing schemas, not for reading content, so its downloads measure a small group of developers.
Most Hygraph sites call a GraphQL API directly or use a general GraphQL client, so npm undercounts the platform. I could not read counts for a second Hygraph package.
Market share
I tried to read W3Techs’ Hygraph page and it failed to load, so I have no verified market-share figure. W3Techs detects platforms from page code, and headless sites hide many of those signals, so it would likely undercount Hygraph.
For comparison, W3Techs listed Sanity, Storyblok and Strapi each at under 0.1% of known-CMS sites in October 2026.
Pricing
Hygraph’s pricing page (read October 20, 2026) lists three plans.
| Hobby | Growth | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | From $199 a month | Custom |
| Seats | 3 | 10 | Up to 200 |
| API calls | 500,000 | 1,000,000 | 50,000,000+ |
| Asset traffic | 100 GB | 500 GB | 25,000 GB+ |
| Entries | 1,000 | 10,000 | 1,000,000+ |
| Locales | 2 | 3 | Up to 80 |
| Models | 20 | 40 | Up to 500 |
| Remote sources | 0 | 1 | Up to 10 |
| Uptime SLA | None | None | Up to 99.95% |
- Growth overages: $0.20 per million API operations and $0.20 per GB of asset traffic.
- Enterprise extras: SSO, audit logs, multitenancy, dedicated infrastructure and 34 regions on a dedicated cluster.
- Trial: A 30-day Enterprise trial, and no credit card for Hobby or the trial.
- Annual billing: Offered, but the page did not list yearly prices, so I do not know the discount.
- Currency: The page did not state it, so I assume USD and would confirm.
The Hobby plan lists 0 remote sources, and Growth lists 1. Content Federation connects remote sources, so it likely needs Growth or higher, but the page does not say so outright.
Pricing changes, so confirm the numbers before you quote them. For one market’s build rates, see our website development cost in India guide.
AI and agent features
Hygraph’s product pages describe an “AI-ready knowledge graph” and a hosted MCP server (a connector that lets AI tools read content).
They say the MCP server and AI Assist are on all plans, with usage limits, and AI Agents are Enterprise only. The pages give no launch dates and no usage numbers, and the page’s claim that analysts predict agentic interfaces will drive “50% to 80%” of digital engagement names no analyst or timeframe, so I would not repeat it.
Ratings
- G2: 4.4 out of 5 from 734 reviews (page modified October 6, 2026; I could not see individual review dates). That is lower than Sanity (4.7), Directus (4.8) and the 4.5 scores for Storyblok and Strapi in my earlier checks.
- Hygraph’s own claims: The company says it ranked second of 102 headless CMS products in G2’s Summer 2025 report and #1 in customer satisfaction, and it lists Spring 2026 G2 badges. Those depend on G2’s reports and category cuts, which I did not open, so I treat them as vendor claims.
A rating near 4.4 from 734 reviews is a solid score on a decent sample, but it still reflects self-selected reviewers.
How Hygraph compares on the numbers?
| Hygraph | Sanity | Storyblok | Strapi | Directus | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting model | Closed SaaS | SaaS; MIT studio repo | Closed SaaS | Open source plus Cloud | Source-available |
| Latest disclosed funding | $30M Series B (Mar 2023) | $85M Series C (May 2025) | $80M Series C (Jun 2024) | $31M Series B (Jun 2022) | $7M Series A (Nov 2022) |
| G2 | 4.4 from 734 | 4.7 from 926 | 4.5 from 596 | 4.5 from 206 | 4.8 from 53 |
| Starting paid price | $199 a month | $15 per seat a month | $99 a month | $35 a month (Cloud) | Not confirmed |
These companies count users and customers differently, so I did not compare them on that. GitHub stars do not apply to Hygraph.
For the wider market picture, see our headless CMS statistics article. If you are weighing a GraphQL-based build, our custom web application development service covers that kind of project.
What the numbers suggest
- Hygraph has raised less than most rivals. $43.7 million through 2023, with no round since that I could find, sits well below Storyblok’s $138 million total.
- The 2022 customer claim is old. “50,000+ teams” has no method or later update.
- Its niche is GraphQL and data federation. The pricing page’s remote-source limits (0 on Hobby, 1 on Growth) suggest federation is a paid feature.
- Reviews are solid, not top of class. A 4.4 from 734 reviews trails Sanity and Directus.
- Public data is thin. There are no downloads, stars, revenue or verified market share to quote.
FAQ
How much funding has Hygraph raised?
$43.7 million in total as of its $30 million Series B on March 29, 2023, led by One Peak. I found no later round.
Is Hygraph the same as GraphCMS?
Yes. GraphCMS rebranded as Hygraph on July 12, 2022, alongside the launch of Content Federation.
How much does Hygraph cost?
Hobby is free. Growth starts at $199 a month, and Enterprise is custom. Confirm on Hygraph’s pricing page.
How many customers does Hygraph have?
Hygraph claimed more than 50,000 teams in July 2022. It has not published a current total, and the claim has no stated method.
Is Hygraph open source?
No, it is a hosted, closed product. For an open-source option, see Strapi or Payload.
What is Hygraph’s market share?
I could not verify it, because the W3Techs page failed to load. Detection tools undercount headless sites anyway.
Is Hygraph good for GraphQL?
It is built around GraphQL, and its own survey says 61.7% of respondents actively use GraphQL. That survey is vendor-run, so it shows what Hygraph’s audience reports, not the market.
