TanStack is a family of open-source JavaScript libraries led by Tanner Linsley. The best known are TanStack Query (formerly React Query, for fetching and caching server data), Table (headless data tables), Router, Form, Virtual (long-list rendering) and Start, a full-stack framework built on Router. Most of them work with React, Vue, Solid, Svelte and other front ends.
TanStack has no revenue or paid plan to report, so the public numbers are npm downloads, GitHub stars, a few partners and survey mentions.
I pulled the download counts straight from npm’s public API and, because they look unusually large, I checked them against React, Next.js and Lodash for the same dates.

npm downloads, and a warning about reading them
| Package | Sep 19 to Oct 18, 2026 | Sep 19 to Oct 18, 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
@tanstack/react-query | 279,215,374 | 49,202,109 | About +468% |
@tanstack/react-virtual | 107,833,585 | 23,100,216 | About +367% |
@tanstack/react-table | 92,288,276 | 20,675,898 | About +346% |
@tanstack/react-router | 89,859,447 | 4,239,860 | About +2,019% |
@tanstack/react-start | 59,642,596 | 417,143 | About +14,198% |
@tanstack/react-form | 14,474,710 | 1,736,621 | About +734% |
I calculated the changes from the counts above.
The control check. I pulled the same two windows for three packages that are not TanStack:
| Control package | Sep 19 to Oct 18, 2026 | Sep 19 to Oct 18, 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
react | 772,199,411 | 192,094,319 | About +302% |
next | 266,194,038 | 55,807,183 | About +377% |
lodash | 690,732,705 | 316,914,977 | About +118% |
React’s monthly downloads about quadrupled in a year, and Lodash, an older utility library, more than doubled. It is unlikely that real React developers quadrupled, so something is inflating counts across npm.
I could not identify the cause. Automated installs, CI builds, AI coding agents, mirrors and a change in how npm counts are all possibilities, and I found no source that explains it. Because of this:
- Read TanStack growth against React’s roughly 4x. Query (about 5.7x), Table (about 4.5x) and Virtual (about 4.7x) grew only a little faster than React. That is not strong evidence of extra adoption.
- Router (about 21x), Form (about 8x) and Start (about 143x) clearly outgrew the ecosystem. Those are the numbers that suggest real change, though still not a measure of developers.
- Do not add the packages together. TanStack Start depends on Router, and many projects install Query, Table and Router side by side, so one project can count in several rows.
- Do not turn downloads into users or sites. npm counts include repeat installs, CI and bots.
The same caveat applies to npm growth figures in other statistics articles that use the same September 19 to October 18 windows. If you reuse a “downloads grew X%” line from any of them, compare it with React’s roughly 4x.
GitHub stars and activity
The TanStack organization page shows 30 repositories and 11.6k followers.
| Repository | Stars (Oct 20, 2026) | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| query | 50,409 (org page); 50.1k (repo page) | Async state and data fetching |
| table | 28,475 | Headless tables and datagrids |
| router | 15,160 | Type-safe router (Start lives in this repo) |
| form | 6,713 | Headless form state |
| db | 3,935 | Reactive client store |
| ai | 3,180 | TypeScript AI SDK |
| store | 905 | Framework-agnostic store |
| pacer | 781 | Debounce, throttle and queue utilities |
| hotkeys | 738 | Keyboard shortcuts |
| config | 397 | Package publishing tools |
- Licenses: Query, Table and Router are MIT.
- Release pace: The router repository, which holds Start’s packages, published a release on October 14, 2026, and its individual packages have version numbers like 1.169 to 1.171, which suggests very frequent releases. I could not read an earlier date.
- Star history: I found no dated earlier star counts I could trust, so I make no growth claim.
TanStack Start
- Status: I could not confirm whether TanStack Start has reached a stable 1.0. The router repository’s releases page did not mention a 1.0, and TanStack’s own site would not load for me. A December 18, 2025 podcast episode with Tanner Linsley (LogRocket) lists a chapter titled “Start 1.0 status and real-world adoption” but the page gives no details.
- Downloads:
@tanstack/react-starthad 59,642,596 downloads in the 30 days to October 18, 2026, up from 417,143 a year earlier. As noted, it installs alongside Router, so the two overlap. - State of JavaScript 2025: TanStack Start was not in the main meta-framework ranking, because the survey said it was not out of beta. It ranked first among write-in “other” meta-frameworks, ahead of TanStack Router (second) and React Router (third). The page lists 235 beside Start but does not label what that number is, so I would not quote it as a respondent count. The survey authors wrote that this was “a clear signal that TanStack Start is going to make a very strong entrance in next year’s” results.
- For comparison: The
nextpackage had 266,194,038 downloads in the same window. Start’s count is about 22% of that, subject to the inflation caveat above. For the platform side of Next.js, see our Vercel statistics page.
TanStack Partners, sponsors and funding
- Partners: The LogRocket podcast page (December 18, 2025) names WorkOS, Clerk, Netlify and Cloudflare as partners, with no terms.
- Funding model: The podcast chapters mention sponsorship and “supporting maintainers,” but I found no sponsor counts, amounts, funding round or acquisition. A third-party sponsor tracker I opened held no numbers either.
- Company: I did not find a verified company structure, team size or revenue figure.
TanStack Pricing and cost
TanStack libraries are free under open-source licenses (MIT for the three I checked). You pay for hosting, any services you connect and the developer hours.

What the TanStack numbers suggest in 2026?
- TanStack Query and Table are widely installed. Their repositories have about 50,100 and 28,400 stars, and their npm counts are in the tens to hundreds of millions a month.
- Download growth is mostly an ecosystem effect. React quadrupled in the same window, so only Router, Form and Start stand out.
- Start is the one to watch. It topped the State of JS write-in list and is growing fast from a tiny base, but its 1.0 status is unconfirmed.
- Public business data is missing. No revenue, team size or sponsor total is published anywhere I could read.
- The family is large. The organization lists 30 repositories, and I did not cover every package.
FAQ
How many downloads does TanStack Query get?
@tanstack/react-query had 279,215,374 npm downloads from September 19 to October 18, 2026. React itself had about four times its downloads of a year earlier in the same window, so growth figures need that context.
How many GitHub stars does TanStack Query have?
About 50,100 stars on its repository page and 50,409 on the organization page, on October 20, 2026.
Is TanStack Start better than Next.js?
The data cannot answer that. Next.js had more than four times Start’s npm downloads in the same window, and State of JS 2025 left Start out of its main ranking because it was in beta.
Who owns TanStack?
It is led by Tanner Linsley. I found no verified company, funding round or acquisition.
Is TanStack Table the same as React Table?
TanStack Table is the current name for the library once called React Table. The react-table adapter package I counted is @tanstack/react-table.
